friends kyle here i hope00:01you guys are doing so well today today00:04we're going to be talking about00:06coffee grinders this one more00:07specifically right here the df-64 now00:10depending on where you are in the world00:11it might go by a different name but here00:13in canada in north america we call it00:15the df64 now this this is a coffee00:18grinder for the home that boasts low00:20retention and has really taken00:22the home barista00:24market forums reddit by storm and00:27rightfully so so we're going to talk all00:28about my experience so far00:30how this grinder fits in the landscape00:32of grinders and coffee in the world that00:35we live in today i also want to compare00:37it with a very popular competitor to00:39this grinder which would be the eureka00:40mignon single dose oro because this also00:43boasts lower tension 65 millimeter00:45flappers a very similar design as you00:47can see so i want to talk about my00:49experience we're going to brew some00:50coffee in just a second we're going to00:51dive all into the df00:5464. before we do i just want to say hey00:56thanks for thanks for watching this00:58video if you haven't yet just scroll01:00down a little bit just click that little01:01like button down below a huge freeway01:04free way to support this channel and it01:06really makes a huge difference every01:08every single light counts and if you01:09haven't yet click that red button that01:11says subscribe love you all and let's01:13dive into this oh one last thing the01:15sponsor today's video is third wave01:17water which i'm excited to talk to you01:19about them01:21let's make some coffee01:23now i don't know if you know this but01:25coffee is 9801:27water and so the water that you use is01:29one of the most crucial aspects of01:30creating great coffee at home you can01:32get a great grinder but i tell you01:34having good water will actually be a01:36better result in your cup before a01:38better grinder will now third wave water01:40steps in here because this is the01:41perfect coffee mineral supplement to use01:44rather than using like tap water or like01:47bottled water now how this works is you01:49take one of these little packets that01:51are filled with minerals that are01:52specifically for your coffee this one01:54here is for filter coffee this one here01:56for espresso that also protects your01:57espresso machines01:59and they also have a dark roast profile02:01you take one of these you add it to a02:03demineralized water like distilled or02:05ionized water and you mix it up and you02:08use that in your espresso machines or in02:09your filter coffee and honestly it's02:12game changing if you want to try this02:13out maybe you've never tried upgrading02:15your water game i've got you covered use02:17a link down in the description below to02:18get 15 off or use code kyle15 at02:21checkout thirdwavebutter.com thirdly02:23water is easily the best way to upgrade02:25your coffee this isn't over hype this is02:27definitely recommended by so many02:28professionals if you want to upgrade02:30your coffee you want better coffee at02:32home before you spend a ton of money on02:34a coffee grinder do yourself a favor and02:36upgrade your water02:37[Music]02:39okay so you guys know normally i do02:41blind taste tests and02:44today we're not going to do that now02:45there's a couple reasons why first off02:48i'm not always a huge fan of blind taste02:50tests so i'll probably do them again in02:51the future but to base a review off of02:54one one comparison like the flavor02:56profiles that i get it's just not02:58completely fair there's so many02:59variables in brewing one cup of coffee03:01um so i'm not gonna do that rather this03:03is going to be a test based off of my03:05weeks of experience with these grinders03:07comparing them daily pulling03:08back-to-back shots03:10both of these birds are fairly seasoned03:12well-seasoned03:13and i'm happy with the results but let's03:15drink these03:16the dl6403:21gotta rinse my palette i know there'll03:23be comments03:25yeah03:26okay so i need to give some context on03:28this grinder there are different bur03:30options you can get in the df-64 the03:32minion single dose oro does not have03:34that now we're going to get right into03:35this in a second but this is important03:37for those who aren't aware the df64 has03:39its ida mill uh flappers the 6403:42millimeter flappers those are the birds03:43that are in this grinder right now but03:45i've also tested the ssp03:48red speed bursts so i have the03:50multi-purpose unimodal bursts i've03:51tested that in this grinder too and i'll03:53share my thoughts on those and my03:55experience with those uh later in this03:56video now this burst set is their stock03:59diamond inside 65 millimeter bursts and04:01the results from the item mills the04:03stock burrs in the df64 which is their04:05more budget-friendly option which most04:07people are gonna go for uh versus the04:09oro single dose04:12the coffee is both very good okay we've04:14got two great 64 65 millimeter flat04:17first flappers are great at making great04:19coffee with good clarity some great04:21sweetness now the ds-6404:24for me this is a more unimodal style04:27burr what does that word mean well when04:29coffee's ground you know there's04:30different size particles it's not all04:32one size04:33and when the coffee is broken down and04:36cut up by that bur there's a more04:39uniform04:40size of that grind distribution if you04:42were to chart this out like i'll put04:44right here somewhere on the screen04:45the distribution of those grounds will04:47have a tighter distribution they'll be04:49more04:50alike than different where something04:52like the migno in my experience this one04:55has a wider04:57distribution of grounds and that's not a04:59bad thing some people think that you05:00want the more uniform that's not always05:02the case but this one has a wider race05:03you're getting some more sweetness in05:05the cup getting a little bit more05:06complexity where this one you're getting05:08a lot of clarity uh with some sweetness05:10but it's a little more linear where this05:12one feels a little bit more textured05:14depending on your your palette and what05:16your preference is uh one might be05:17better than the other but both both are05:20pretty good so let's talk about some05:21things that you'd want to know if you're05:23buying the df64 compared to the oro05:25build quality experiences realities05:28modifications those ssp burs05:31and ultimately which grinder these two05:33you should buy so the df64 it's a05:35chinese make grinder its price is very05:38affordable for what it's offering05:40depending on where you are in the world05:41these start around four hundred dollars05:43with those stock bursts and you can get05:45those with ssp birds but it normally05:47adds a few hundred dollars05:49it's pretty fantastic for what you're05:51getting here this is a fully metal build05:54you can get them in a bunch of different05:55colors this one here is the white the05:57colors themselves are actually a wrap05:59this isn't actually white metal it's not06:01painted feels great i have no issues06:02with that because06:04any issues with scratches i can just06:05replace this wrap down the road or06:07change the color if i decide to change06:09my06:09appearance of my coffee part you know06:11the other pieces are all metal06:13everything feels good everything feels06:14solid the grind adjustment feels very06:17nice to use it's got a very good tension06:19similar to like the niche zero um some06:22criticism though we do have a plastic06:24dosing cup and you know much prefer that06:28niche zero or even uh the metal one on06:30this grinder as well uh and then this06:33bellows here this deceivingly is is06:35metal06:37the bellows you know it's a bellows and06:38bellows really i've yet to feel a very06:41premium feeling experience bellows maybe06:43it's out there um but it's just yeah06:45it's a bellows it's squishy it is what06:48it is if you move down we have the power06:50button underneath the dosing cup awk06:52replacement for sure but i do enjoy how06:54it's lit up i can tell that this grinder06:57is plugged in there is power to its06:58source06:59it isn't a bad feeling experience it's07:02just an awkward one but honestly i think07:04a lot of people criticize this button i07:06think it's okay it's fine they should07:08probably change that in the future but07:09for now07:11it's not a reason not to buy this07:12grinder in my opinion quite honestly07:14it's heavy07:16it feels good everything about it feels07:18pretty premium and even the motor07:21it sounds pretty good too07:24and in my review of this grinder i07:26really didn't love the experience of the07:28motor you know it's shaky it's loud07:30overall i think the build quality is07:32good for the money it's very hard to07:34beat the df64 for the size of this07:37grinder the power of this grinder and07:39what it offers07:40but what about workflow now this is07:42really important and i think workflow is07:43an underrated asset to a coffee grinder07:46i think using a coffee grinder every day07:48should be an enjoyable experience you07:49shouldn't have to think too much about07:51it it should be able just to be used07:53without having too much fuss and over07:56the years flatburg grinders have been07:58known to have a little bit more fuss07:59than like their conical counterparts for08:01example the niche zero is a great08:03example of a grinder while not perfect08:05and it has lots of flaws it's easy to08:07use you turn it on it's easy to dial in08:10it brews good coffee and that's it and08:12then flatbread grinders they have their08:13own issues too and and i think both of08:15these are trying to address some of08:17those and that's why you'll be looking08:18at these08:19for the df64 and the mignole they08:21they're trying to address that retention08:22issue a lot of flatberry grinders have08:24retention issues they get coffee grounds08:26stuck in the ground chamber ground shoes08:29etc that's why both of these have a08:30little bellow system to pump air through08:32the grind chamber to force grounds into08:35that dosing cup uh they can be a lot08:37more expensive08:38and just a little bit more nitpicky08:40often a lot of static issues just the08:42way that coffee is ground now one of the08:44things with the df64 dial while nice to08:46use it can be hard to see what08:49adjustment you're at what number you're08:51at specifically08:52now we'll talk about some fixes to that08:54but out of the box can be really08:56frustrating not knowing exactly if08:57you're at 33 or 35 or 42 right there's a09:01definitely an adjustment reality there09:04you've got to get used to looking down09:06at this little09:07circle with a line through the middle to09:09see what you're at the minion oro09:11doesn't have that issue when it comes to09:12seeing where you're at on the grinds09:14easy to see but this does have a dial09:17that needs multiple rotations to go from09:18filter to espresso speaking of that how09:21do these guys do how does the df6409:23specifically do for filter and espresso09:25in my experience with those stock09:26animals fantastic you know they do need09:28to be seasoned and i have the stainless09:30steel versions that were uncoated for me09:32it took about 10 15 pounds of coffee to09:34really break those burrs in a lot of you09:36ask what seasoning is really essentially09:38all it is is breaking down any09:39imperfections in the burr by running09:41coffee through the grinder just wears09:43down those birds and gets them to the09:44place where they need to be for the09:45longevity and consistency and those09:47bruise09:48now the item mills do a great job like i09:50mentioned for espresso the espresso is09:52clean a lot of transparency no it's not09:54the best espresso i've ever had no09:56they're not as good as the ssp burs but09:58out of the box for most people it's an10:00enjoyable experience and most people10:03won't need to upgrade to those ssps10:05now for filtered coffee the same is true10:07the coffee is clean it's very sweet i10:10found really good cups of coffee out of10:11those item mills i was honestly really10:13surprised for the prices grinder with10:15those burrs now that being said i did10:17align my burrs out of the box this was10:20pretty aligned but it was not perfect10:22now if you're unsure of how to align a10:23grinder i've actually linked a link to10:25lance hetrick's video to lining grinders10:27down below a dear friend of mine and he10:29does amazing job of explaining how to10:30align flapper grinders but that's also10:33true of the manual single dose i had to10:35align this one as well so that's not10:36something that you find just on cheaper10:38in grinders it's just something that's10:40more common in flapper grinders until10:41you get up to a higher price range but10:43if you want more information on the10:44lining grinders go check out that video10:46and i'm going to talk about it in a10:47future video so be sure to subscribe so10:49you don't miss that one beyond the grind10:51adjustment this bellows does work pretty10:52well now this does have a d clumper10:55built in this one is the version two10:56it's an updated version from pasty10:59clumpers i know james hoffman's review11:00this grinder in the past they've updated11:02since then to help but it's still not11:04perfect and i was really hoping in11:06reviewing this i would say this is the11:08perfect flapper grinder there's no11:09issues just use it out of the box just11:11isn't the case you do need to adjust11:13that de-clumper um or just understand11:16that if you're changing coffees or11:17changing grind settings you're gonna11:19have to run some coffee through to11:21ensure any coffee retention stuck in11:23that de-clumper is pushed through now in11:25my experience i've also removed that11:27de-clumper and that helps a lot with11:30retention okay if you're open to modding11:32your grinder i will be covering this in11:35the future on how to remove the11:36de-clumper as well as some other11:38modifications on the df-6411:40but it is an experience you do have to11:42find out how to take this grinder apart11:44and remove that is it necessary for most11:46people no but for those who make want to11:49make sure that they have like zero11:50retention then absolutely yes you do11:52need to remove that to clumper or adjust11:55it to some other models that are on the11:56internet some people put the mythos one11:58grind clumper in there and that helps12:00break down the clumps and keep the12:02retention as low as possible that being12:04said the retention on this grinder is12:05very good i i had very good experiences12:08in taking this grinder apart which is12:09very easy to do with the twist of this12:11dial you can literally pull off the12:12burrs without any tools12:14um the retention is fantastic my12:16experience on the menu single dose12:17wasn't as good now this also has some12:19declutter issues which i've talked in12:20the full review but even without the12:22de-clumper i found there were still12:23grounds getting caught in some areas of12:25the grind chamber i was still classified12:27as a low retention grinder and in my12:29review i did say without the de-clumper12:31it was much better but i do say the12:33df-64 is better at being a low-retention12:35grinder than the minion single dose the12:38bellow system as well on the df64 works12:41really well where i said the minion12:43single doses bellows really didn't push12:45the grounds through because of declumper12:46issues but also because air was leaked12:49through different areas of the bellows12:50where this one here has a lot of suction12:52and honestly sometimes depending on what12:54grind setting i'm grinding at once i12:56push those bellows you can get like a12:58gram of coffee pushed through it works13:00really well and honestly i would13:02recommend using it for most people if we13:04work down here this grinder does have an13:06issue as static as so many flapper13:08grinders do if you remove that13:09de-clumper you're going to have even13:11more issues so be aware of that13:13regardless i always use rdt with the13:15ds64 to help just keep those clumps13:17stuck together a little less static and13:19just help reduce the mess okay i could13:22go on and on and on about the ds64 there13:24are so many videos on the internet13:25covering it so what you really want to13:27know is is how does it compare right how13:29is it compared to this grinder here13:30should you consider this grinder in the13:32market today so here's my answer to that13:34first off compared to the oro the oro13:37it's a beautiful grinder eureka really13:39tried to tackle not only the df64 but13:42the niche zero in this and like i13:44mentioned already i am working on an13:45ultimate comparison for the best single13:47dosing grinder including some of these13:49grinders behind me and so again13:51subscribe so you don't miss that and i'm13:52going to include these two but what i do13:55want to say is that the df64 for me it13:58doesn't feel like a downgrade from the13:59oro this really was supposed to be the14:01premium version to fix the df64 issues14:05things like static things like that14:07grind clumper things like it's it's just14:09a small weird um quirky imperfections14:13just doesn't really fix it it just has14:15its own right this still is messy this14:17still has retention issues14:20it's loud it vibrates uh for me the the14:23workflow is actually much better on the14:24df64 than the oro single dose does that14:27mean you should only go for the df6414:28well no by the time you're watching this14:30video they might have fixed some of the14:31issues on the manual single dose this is14:33the first version uh this grinder's only14:35been out for a couple months14:36but guys like at the end of the day like14:38you want the best value possible and14:40this grinder you know here's the prices14:42on the screen here this grinder14:44depending on where you're on the world14:45is is14:46almost double the price and for me i14:48just don't see where that money is going14:49other than this is an italian-made14:51grinder versus a chinese-made grinder14:53and and like it doesn't feel14:56doesn't feel that much cheaper14:58so what about like the modifications of15:00the grinder like i said the cup profiles15:01on these two they're similar but this15:03one obviously has some more texture um15:06this one has a little less clarity than15:08the df64 but let's talk about those ssp15:11burrs because that's a big conversation15:12within the df6415:14really the ssps and the df64 turn this15:17four or 500 grinder into15:21a grinder way out of its price range in15:23terms of cup quality now a lot of those15:25workflow issues do not change which15:27ssp's15:28but the cup profiles are fantastic using15:31the unimodal multi-purpose ssp red speed15:35burst this the clarity on this is just15:38unreal you know there's definitely a15:41great filter coffee grinder in this with15:43those burrs and the espresso while not15:46for everybody it's got a lot of clarity15:48now i will say you do lose a little bit15:50of range with those multi-purpose burrs15:52at least in my experience now depending15:54on your coffee can sometimes be hard to15:57pull a shot15:58unimodable are there a multi-purpose16:01burr you can do espresso16:03some people prefer them for espresso16:06some people might want to go with the16:07high uniformity ssp burst and i'll link16:09both of those down below so you can16:10check those out the high uniformity16:12would be more similar to like this kind16:13of burst style where it produces a16:15little more fines some more boulders16:17less of a tight distribution in their16:19grounds and so uh it'll produce some16:21more texture you know the the16:23multi-purpose burrs they're not very16:25textured you do lose some of that16:27texture in exchange for clarity and some16:30people really like that thick gooey16:31espresso16:32those ssp burs at least the16:34multi-purpose ones won't do that also16:36with those ssp burs uh you do lose that16:39zero point um when i installed my ssp16:42burs my zero point went from zero or16:45just past zero to thirty there's a16:47couple ways you can fix that one of16:49those is replacing the sticker and so16:50that putting the the sticker where the16:52zero would actually be on your new zero16:54point which is 30 on mine or 3d printing16:57a dial indicator that was sent on the16:59collar here that would actually point17:00kind of like a clock17:01to um where your zero point would be17:04speaking of 3d printing that's where a17:05lot of the modifications come in for the17:07df64 now what i've been learning is17:10there's a whole world that i've been17:12completely unaware of and 3d printing17:15and there's communities out there on17:16thingiverse who are just sharing17:18open source uh 3d printing materials for17:21the dl6417:22things like issues to fix its dosing cup17:25bring it closer to the chute17:27making dosing funnels so that the17:29grounds don't get spewed everywhere on17:31your counter another modification that17:33actually fixes the popcorn that puts a17:35cone inside um this section here which17:39makes it so that it's harder for the the17:41grounds to pop back up and fixes those17:43popcorning issues and then some people17:45have even modded and 3d printed the17:47de-clumpers which i don't know if i'd17:49necessarily recommend um17:51depending on the plastic that you're17:53using it's not always food safe but17:54that's that's a whole other conversation17:56that we're not going to get into today17:57so to summarize to wrap this up the
